Google removing keyword targeting from YouTube ads – WTF?

Posted by NoLeafClover777 on October 12, 2022 at 1:49 am

In Chapter 971 of “Google Continues to Make Things Worse for Ads Users in Pursuit of More Profits”, I am now getting this popup message in my Video ads campaigns:

*Soon, you’ll no longer be able to add keyword targeting to video campaigns that drive conversions because it can limit campaign performance. Starting next year, all remaining keyword targeting will be removed. To remove keywords now, click ‘Remove keywords’.*

This is so bad… it’s one of the ONLY good ways outside of retargeting to target people with proper intent.

What’s next, they remove your ability to target specific YouTube channels?

FUCK you Google and your endless pursuit of share price increases at the expense of your userbase.

They’ve been removing ability for search terms on pmax, manual shopping being converted to pmax, and these yt as well. Clearly to increase profits while letting advertisers second guessing their weekly/monthly reports.

Terrible decision. The amount of small brain decisions being cooked up over there is remarkable. Not sure I can think of one recent update that benefited advertisers more than googles bottom line.

“FUCK you Google on your endless pursuit of share price increases at the expense of your user base.”
Semi-factual. Google doesn’t give a shit about their “user base” – they never have. They’re a publicly traded company; so they’re focused on share price. The irony? The VAST majority of their (Alphabet/Google/YouTube) COMES FROM ADS!
The slow removal of control from agencies/advertisers (having been agency & in-house) has been occurring for YEARS. They don’t give a shit about SMBs/Agencies…they need their stock price to improve.

Their stock price has a target of $140 over the next 12 months, which is over 40% where it is now, so they’re very motivated to screw over advertisers to ensure they reach their goals.

It’s going to be a black box soon and we won’t have any control.

My wonder is what’s the point of using them for ads if we can’t get to the customer we need. We’re in mental health so we already play the guessing game a lot. I’m not about to waste money while they play it too with an algorithm. SMH ?‍♂️

I agree that this is not helpful, but I have to imagine that with all the privacy restrictions and targeting becoming an opt-in exercise, it has to be increasingly difficult for Google and other platforms to be able to target like they used to. That’s why GA4 is so different from UA, right? For clients and agencies with budget, it isn’t that big of a deal. For those that need to be surgical and judicious with the ad spend, it sucks hard.

Google want to find ways to charge more clics, not more business to his clients. Period.
