Google Merchant Centre/Shopify help with GTIN Numbers

Posted by MavisofBushey on April 6, 2023 at 10:54 am

I have a Shopify store that sells yarn. All these products have barcodes or ISBN numbers for the books and patterns.

As far as I can work out, the Barcode \*is\* the GTIN/EAN number that I should be using, and I put all this information into my shopify products page and Google accepts that info when I publish it to the Merchant Centre.

However, a couple of weeks later google seems to forget this information and Shopify will say:

‘Demoted: Limited Performance due to missing value \[gtin\] in \[shopping\_ads\] \[GB\]’

Google will tell me the same, but all these products were once published with this information.

Is Google forgetting the information for some reason, or am I putting the wrong information in?

Check Shopify to ensure the GTINs are still there and then check items in your feed to see if they are also there. If they are missing from Shopify contact Shopify support for help.

If they are missing from your feed data check the settings in your feed management tool and also look for any rules you might have in Merchant Center that could be removing or changing that data field.

If you are using the Google Sales Channel app, that moved from being a Shopify app to a Google app a few months ago. Maybe that transition caused an issue in your store.

Otherwise, once you put in the right GTIN in the right place in Shopify, it should not get lost or removed. Keep in mind some manufactures will make up their own internal barcode number but that won’t be a GTIN. I would double check what you have is a GTIN to begin with. I would also double check you don’t have any rules or supplemental feed running that is overriding your data for some reason. If you can see the GTIN in your shopping feed and or on your Shopify store, then it should make it to your shopping ads.
