Google Ads Relentless Recommendations After Budget Reduction

Posted by misty-111 on July 30, 2024 at 9:52 pm

One of my accounts has had significant budget reductions recently (30% total). This was not my decision to make, the client has a set budget and requested we reduce by that amount, etc etc. It's a large account so I spared our highest-performing campaigns and reduced spend on the campaigns that weren't performing as effectively – to minimize as much damage as possible to the health of the account overall. I also removed our placements on Google Search Partners as I noticed more costly conversions coming from those sources.

However, a week after these reductions occurred, the Recommendations for this account have all been budget related and Search Partners related. The account has also been ranking the percentage increase for optimization score super high for these two things, essentially dropping our optimization score by 20% for not accepting Google's 'suggestions.'

I have been trying to optimize where I can in other ways, adding new headlines to RSA's, adding images to Demand Gen ads etc but these improvements are ranked really low, at 2% total in terms of the optimization score increase.

I know for the time being all I can do is keep dismissing the recommendations as they come up to give the account time to adjust to its new budget, but I wanted to know if any of you have run into this problem before?

Our quality score has dropped, Search Impression share due to quality and budget has also dropped as well.

This behaviour is fairly predatory on Google's part. ie, your account cannot reach 100% optimization without raising your budgets… or doing what they suggest. I mentioned this to my Google account rep as well and he said there's no way of changing it, just keep dismissing the recommendations.
