Google Ads – “how to” is a negative keyword in my list, but “how to start a cleaning business” triggered my ad yesterday. WTF?

Why would “how to start a cleaning business” trigger my “cleaning business” phrase match keyword, when “how to” is a negative keyword (phrase match)? Any way around this?

Did you make sure to set the dates to after you added the negative keyword?

When did you add the negative keyword and what’s the date range of your report?

    That’s peculiar

See if in the coming days youll get how to search terms

You could add that search term as an exact negative kw

Negative keywords modifier work different than keyword targeting

This shouldn’t happen but Google Ads is a very complicated system and sometimes errors happen. But it’s rare. As others pointed out, you may just be looking at the report in a time period before you made the change.
