  • Getting started with a social media presence after all these years…

I have never been one for social media. I’ve had accounts on facebook, linked in, and twitter for 10+ years, but have posted maybe 3x on facebook and not once anywhere else.

I just started a business and it’s clear how not being active on these platforms and cultivating an online network is a problem. I’ve started posting on linked a couple times a week and liking/commenting to posts, but my network is tiny (120 ppl) and even many of those aren’t close connections of people I keep in touch with. I’ve started to follow several well-known names as well and reacting to their posts.

So where should I start? Is it worth starting from 0 on Twitter/X or is the ROI just not worth it at this point?

I’m reaching out to people whose profiles and posts are interesting using LI Inmail in order to expand my network. It’s a slog and very time-consuming, plus response rate is low since we don’t know each other.

FYI my business is a dev shop since that will probably matter in terms of recs for which social media to use. I just got on Reddit 2 weeks ago and it’s been an awesome resource. I get a ton of interaction with users, but as more of an anonymous platform, it doesn’t really help grow a network.

Given your business is a development shop, LinkedIn is a good choice. Continue posting regularly and engaging with content. You can also join relevant groups and participate in discussions.

Share your expertise, insights, and industry-related news. You can post 3-4x/week. That also depends on how much time you have, for LI it is better to focus on quality. Monitor your social media analytics to see what works best for your audience.

In addition to InMails, try connecting with people who are in your industry, and personalize your connection requests.

You should also consider paid ads, if you have a budget for it.

    Ignore twitter, it’s dead.

Hey It would be best for you to focus on keeping your business on track, running operations and bringing in money. I would advise you outsourcing your social media posting. I can assist if you would like. I do this for a few clients.
