Freelancer or Agency: Which is Better?

Posted by ialwaysmisspenalties on May 11, 2024 at 8:26 pm

A few days ago, I asked for advice on becoming a freelance PPC specialist. I received some very helpful responses, so thank you.

As I look to take the first steps, I'm considering whether to position myself as a Freelancer or to build myself as an agency (even if the agency is just me).

Could anyone share their experiences or advice on which option might be better? What are the advantages/disadvantages with each approach from both a client and personal perspective?

    Cheers!

I can only speak for myself, but I can’t help but snigger when people label themselves as an agency and it’s just them doing everything or one thing.

People opt for an agency to outsourcing web development, design, SEO, PPC, PR, social media etc. a A team of people. A collective.

One person realistically will do an awful job at all of this.

I think just be honest and transparent. For me, I vote freelancer.

An agency is not really one person. however, it doesn’t matter what you call yourself right now since clients will be just working with you. You can always change this in the future.

You should worry about getting clients… that is where the rubber meets the road. Doing all the research, asking tons of questions and reading all the posts don’t matter if you can not close clients. Too many people spend way too much time in the business plan phase and wait too long to launch. Get out there and win clients…

typically, if the agency is affordable to a small business, then they’re just wasting your money by assigning some low level dumbass to manage your account. those dumbasses are easy to find as freelancers and then to hire and fire until you find the right one.

most “agencies” are just 1-2 people outsourcing everything anyway.

If you think you’ll want to eventually expand to become an agency it’s best to start that way so simplify things. There’s very little extra overhead really. You don’t need to incorporate and you don’t have to trademark your name at this point. Just register as an LLC, it’s not expensive.

This is what I did 11 years ago. And by the way, always be transparent with prospects and clients. Be clear about what you really are during the discovery call.
