I have an opportunity to manage social media for an art event for a school next year, where artists will display their work to be sold. I’m wondering how much I should charge and how many hours I should bill. It would be a part time, work from home kind of job.

This job entails creating and managing a content calendar and writing and scheduling posts to Instagram and Facebook. The artists participating would submit photos and videos, so it’s more planning and posting but not much content creation.

The event is next August, but they want to start populating content on the pages in January, then ramp up posting for promoting the event May-August.

So, what would you charge for this? And how many hours would you bill/budget weekly for this? I’ve never done any freelance work before, so this is all new!

Most social media managers are charging service packages rather than hourly rates which in my opinion is easier and a better deal for my clients. If a client wanted 4 posts a week I would charge $500 a month. That might seem steep but that comes out to about $30 per post and a picture might take me 15 minutes to post but if it’s a reel, it might take me an hour to edit and another 15 minutes to write a caption. And I f I had a client that really only required 15 minutes for every post then I’d charge them less.
Just starting out I think $20/hr is pretty fair but it depends what their budget is, how much you want to do this, and what you can afford. If this is something you would want to transition into and they could only pay $15 an hour then it might be worth it to take the job for the experience while you work on gaining more clients.
