Hello, not sure if this is the correct sub to post this on I’m not the most familiar with reddit but I thought maybe you guys could help with advice or anything.

So for context I’m 21, a rising senior in university majoring in Digital Media and have experience creating content and observing analytics for student organizations as well as some knowledge in design. I was recently hired as a social media assistant for a local insurance firm focused on the 65+ crowd. So far from what I’ve been told the main task for me is to improve local awareness in our area through Facebook ads, then eventually on google Adwords. Most of this I have a rough idea on how to do from my schooling, and the rest I am confident I can figure out but I am really struggling with just where to begin.

I am someone who operates in my own life using detailed and timely to-do lists, this is also how I work, but this is my first professional job so it’s all uncharted territory for me. I am afraid of coming across as unknowledgeable and making my manager doubt giving me this position, as this is my dream job. Is there any kind of guidelines or rough outlines out there, of what someone in my position should be doing? Does anyone have any advice or resources I can go to for help? Is it normal to feel so unprepared and lost in your first job?

Thanks in advance, sorry if this is messy or wrong formatting, typed this in a rush.

Google and Meta offer valuable learning tools and certificates for their ad platforms. First step is to track down those resources and learn the ins-and-outs directly from the platforms themselves.

Some things that you can do to become more knowledgable, especially around the aspects of the business you wouldn’t be expected to already have a grasp on:

Competitor Research (What are they doing right/wrong, what social platforms work the best/worst for them)

Content Calendar (Research key dates and events in your space and brainstorm ways to create content around them)

Local Research (What are some ways you can directly interact with the community and maker your business feel like a part of the neighborhood?)

Also look into general Internet/Social Media Trends (Find reliable resources for trends, sounds, templates that preferable can be delivered to you. Then brainstorm ways that you can leverage trends within your niche)

    How are you measuring “awareness”?

Most small business owners only spend marketing dollars on things that measurably turn into more business. If you’re running an “awareness” campaign- you could be spending thousands of dollars and getting massive amounts of impressions with no observable increase in his new business.

Most inexperienced business owners think “awareness” is all that’s standing in between them and a rush of new customers.

You need to get ahead of that and start going for conversions – running actual ads with actual copy driving people to actual lead generation and phone calls.

If he’s got you sequestered to Facebook only, run a lead generation campaign objective, use Zapier to send him a notification / email every time he gets a lead (which should be place in a spreadsheet for easy tracking) and make his phone blow up with people wanting quotes on insurance.

Find out why people over 65+ are buying insurance, make some ad graphics on Canva and try stuff out. Look at competitors and see what they’re doing – copy it.

If an ad isn’t working and working quickly, don’t be afraid to pull it and swap it out for a new one after like a day or two. You don’t have weeks to gather data and you probably don’t have a big enough budget to either.

Get him leads. Make an impact.
