  • Domain name, impact on SEO ?

Posted by seohelper on August 24, 2016 at 1:24 pm

    Hi Reddit,

I can’t find a good source that is telling me if the domain name has an impact on the position on Google.

For example, if i buy the domaine name notonly.bike and my website is not speaking about bikes.
Does Google in his algorithm will say “what an asshole, joke on domaine names are not funny at all” and will take me down the results pages ?

    Thanks

The stuff after the dot doesn’t matter. So “bike” would not be counted for SEO purposes in your example.

That being said, the words in the domain matter less and less these days, so it’s still totally possible to have a nonsense domain even and still rank. Just gotta get the right kind of content, branding, and links, like you probably would have to anyway.

When starting a new website, one of the first and most important decisions you have to make is choosing a domain name. That choice will impact the website’s success in nearly every area, included search engine optimization (SEO) and social media marketing (SMM)
For example, if they want to rank for “buy green widgets” the person might purchase BuyGreenWidgets.com. EMDs(exact match domains) offered two advantages:

    1. The presence of the keyword phrase in the domain was itself a ranking factor.
    2. The presence of the keyword phrase in the domain encouraged other webmasters to include
    3. The keyword phrase in the anchor text when linking to the site.
