Does keyword bid even matter with Enhanced bidding strategy?

Posted by atomicwalrus544 on February 1, 2023 at 6:58 pm

This question comes from a small business owner doing their own Google Ads, not someone who runs a PPC agency, so there may be some level of stupidity that comes with this question.

In Google Ads, I sent my bids for each keyword. Let’s say Keyword 1 has a bid of $5 and Keyword 2 has a bid for $5. I have enhanced bidding turned on, which lets Google raise or lower bids at will.

I’ve noticed that the “Keyword 2” is drastically outperforming “Keyword 1” and want to raise the bid for “Keyword 2”, changing it from $5 to $8, and then lowering “Keyword 1” bid to $4.

This brings my to my question: Will this even do anything? If with enhanced bidding Google Ads raises and lowers my bids at will whenever they want, would it even matter what the bids are set at?

You may want to look at your impression share for the keywords, ad groups and campaign. No point raising bids on anything if you have most of the impression share. You don’t want to raise bids if you were losing money on each sale you made.

What are your KPIs here? Traffic or conv based? I would move away from eCPC if you have enough conversation data (30 conv for CPA or 50 for ROAS in L30 days) as I’ve found bids are generally higher than in automated bid strategies.
