Do you rely on tools like SEMrush to track SERP changes or do you do it manually?

I want to monitor SERP position changes for top organic and paid search keywords for a couple of cities. However, I noticed that tools like SEMrush are not accurate (even when the settings are set to 'local' and a specific city is selected) but I love that it provides quick insights and is not a manual process. What do you do?

When it is a local campaign the paid results can be disappointing. It makes sense. If SEMRush is not sampling the internet in that location and the ads are ONLY running in that location (not nationwide) it will not be accurate.

I track anything important like a paying client or my own things with rank trackers.

For a potential client or some timeframe that I am not tracking I use SEMRush or other tools like it.

Or just want to get an idea of basic website traffic trends on a site and DO NOT have Google Analytics access? Then i use it.

Anything regional is very hard to track to an accurate degree. I typically just report out the most accurate I can get from SEMrush or Google KWP and then tie it with GA4 traffic data if we see a YoY decrease in traffic. Based on this and other data you can tell whether or not total search volume is decreasing/increasing.

Correct: the fact you keep seeking it out and not converting/ clicking doesn’t help. Meaning searching SERP positions changes based on the user and aptitude to convert. The way your looking is based on impression share and SKAG……its STAG now.

Local SEO tools usually have location specific tracking for maps & organic. You can probably get GAds locations data in Looker Studio. Average position is gone as of 2020/2021

SERPFOX has been the best tool for me to track SERP only changes. They have daily position changes and good charts.

We use SEMrush for our SEO clients and for our own SEO efforts.

Search is personalized, when you look at Google manually you aren’t seeing “average” results but rather the results that Google believes are best for you. SEMrush will give you unbiased results.
