  • Do you get an SEO/SERP boost for having youtube videos on your site?

I know there is a benefit from having a high ranking youtube video appear in the search results… as you’ve got that top spot instead of a competitor.

But I wonder if there is any SERP benefit from including a YouTube hosted video (of your own) in a blog post as opposed to a Vimeo, or Wistia embedded video file?

I’d have thought as the owners of Youtube, Google might like to see the use of Youtube in your content and give you a little SERP boost as a result.

However, unfortunately, from a business point of view, where keeping someone on your site is often the goal, once a YouTube video ends it will often try to lead the viewer away to Youtube to watch more content there… plus there’s the YouTube button in the embedded player itself.

Up till now we’ve typically used Viemo embedded files on our site.. and will sometimes upload separate videos to Youtube with a link to our site in the description.

Just wondering if anyone has any other insights or stats to back up any one approach over another.?

In my opinion – if your target keyword is in the title of the video you’re embedding then yes.

But this is just my opinion coming from past experience/tests on my affiliate sites.

Depends on user intent. If the keyword SERP has videos ranking in the top 10, then including videos on-page will help with relevancy.

Nope otherwise all sites would have youtube videos on them, which would then negate their rankings, boost, resulting in the results we see today.

Where youtube can be a benefit over other platforms is Google does seem to give a bit of a ranking preference over youtube videos in SERP over other platforms, but the SEO benefit to the site is none.
