Do negative keywords serve a purpose if you only use exact match positive keywords?

Posted by GuitarPresent397 on June 9, 2024 at 4:01 pm

For example, if my campaign features a single exact match keyword: "ribbed blue polo shirt" will I even need negative keywords if people only see my ad from searching that exact keyword?

yes because the exact match doesn’t mean exactly the same word it means exactly the same meaning.

Yes 100%. In 2024, exact match runs the way most people assume phrase match works. You can check your list of close variants if you want a better picture of this within your account. Negatives are still necessary to avoid irrelevant terms.

Aside from blocking irrelevant searches, and this is USUALLY not best practice anymore, but you can use negative keywords for ad group sculpting. If you want to funnel specific queries into one ad group over another you can use negatives to do that.

Negative keywords are the bread and butter of any ad account tbh. Exact match is more like phrase match now and having those negative keywords in place will prevent you from wasting any ad spend on clicks you don’t want to bid on.

Negative match types don’t work the same way targeting match types work.

    Google it.

Not as much as broad and phrase keywords. Ever since I started using exact keyword only I rarely use negative keywords.
