Do I have any hopes as a Self-taught Marketer?

Posted by christalud on July 10, 2023 at 7:02 am

When I started learning Facebook and Google Ads, I took my friends businesses and built out a funnel that sold their goods.

The dilemma is, these were very small accounts. I have been trying to look for a better and bigger project to work on but my country has a few people willing to invest in ads.

Do you think there’s an agency out there that is willing to take in someone who is insanely passionate. I just don’t want to be passionate, I want to make money off what I love too.

Did you have any success with the friends and family accounts? If yes, make it into a case study. “Increased new customers to 50 per month” whatever it is.

Keep it short, a page, page and a half of a word document tops. Make a couple graphics and put it on a WordPress or wix type website.

You’re off to the races. Get that link out there via Reddit, upwork, etc and find some paid work.

    Good luck!

Startups are usually more willing to take people without experience but a lot of knowledge. If you can show you’re self taught, they might have you do a project to show you can do the work.

Start taking courses like HubSpot and Google Analytics and get certified. Read books by people who do what you want to do. Be ready to prove yourself in interviews.

Most of us are self-taught! There is absolutely nothing wrong with that as your starting point.

Keep networking and taking on clients. While not necessary, completing certifications that the platforms offer can also lend credibility to your resumé as you build up your experience.

    Good luck!

This is how I started. Still going since 2008.

I focused on converting customers from the yellow pages to search and eventually Facebook. It has its limits. I think working at an agency with peers is a great way to advance your learning.
