  • Do hashtags still work?

Posted by JimMc94 on October 27, 2022 at 10:58 am

I’ve got a brand that I’m trying to grow and I’ve been tagging my content with whatever hashtags apply. I know hashtags used to be massive and are still used to this day, but based on my own social usage it is super rare that I ever even click one. I may just be wildly assuming that just because I don’t click, no one else does, but this is something I thought would be an interesting topic.

I mainly upload for this brand to insta/tiktok/YT shorts. The TikTok alg will blow up straight away and then plateu, whereas Insta/YT is a slow burn and I get consistent views/likes over a longer period of time. Is this directly related to which hashtags are trending at that point in time? More popularity = more traffic?

My question is, do hashtags still hold water? Is the hashtag alive and well or is there a better way to be tagging content to get it on people’s feeds?

Yes, the hashtag still works and they’ll continue to work as long as there is ML.

    * Also as in #barcamp [msg]? Messina, he suggested use of the hashtag to make it easy for lay users without specialized knowledge of search protocols to find specific relevant content.

It’s a win-win for both machine and human

First of all, it is worth noting that the creators of content on Instagram are now, in principle, experiencing difficulties with reach and engagement due to the constant change of algorithms.

As for hashtags specifically, I would recommend abandoning global ones in favor of niche, local hashtags. Unlike global ones, the competition among them is much lower, and you will also get interactions from real, interested users, not bots and spammers. At the same time, it is important to select such hashtags based on the activity of your current and potential audience, as well as the audience of your competitors. Then you will be sure that such hashtags are actually used by your potential customers.

Of course it is still alive, it is still useful! It’s about how you use it. So here’s the solution for you –

▪️Use 10-15 hashtags at least (You can use all 30 as well)

▪️Make sure you don’t use hashtags with over 20M+ posts

▪️Use a combination of Niche + Your Topic + Your Targeted Audience (Coaches, CC, Entrepreneurs, etc) + Brand + Location (Optional)

    ▪️Use 4-5 popular hashtags (800K-2M), 3-4 Medium ones (300k-700k) and 3-4 smaller ones (10-100K)

▪️Make sure all hashtags stay relevant to your niche

▪️Don’t use b@n hashtags at all (Just simply google it)

It is surely working now! I’m getting 3-8K reach on my business page (19K+ followers) and 250-700 reach on my new account which is 2 weeks old (1.2K followers)
