Cookie consent / Consent Mode V2 question

Posted by LetsRidePartner on September 18, 2024 at 11:54 pm

We have an ecommerce site primarily pulling traffic through Google Ads / Google Shopping Ads. We've seen some notifications in our dashboard (can't remember if it was the Ads dashboard or elsewhere) that say we need to implement Consent Mode V2.

I'm looking at our competitors, and they don't seem to have a consent banner/modal/etc. These are well-funded companies that advertise heavily through Google.

Is implementing Consent Mode V2 actually required? We're located in the US but we sell anywhere (as do our competitors). If we don't implement it, will we actually be hurt in any way?

    TIA.

As far as I know, the CCPA is the only thing you need for the USA. If you serve EU customers, they would, in theory, need it. Some companies have been made examples of in the UK, but in reality, nobody is policing it on a wide scale as there are no resources to do so. I would recommend you double-check the legalities from professionals, as Im not an expert.

For your website to be compliant, European customers browsing it would need a Consent Mode v2 banner, so you could set it up so it only appears for the European region.

If you receive Consent Mode flags in your account from Google, they can disable features like remarketing audiences and even conversion tracking if it isn’t resolved. If you suddenly see your conversion count stop abruptly without any major changes, that will probably be why.
