Content Swapping Question – Bad Practice?
My boss has encouraged using this SEO tactic before, so I wanted some feedback on if this would be considered bad. My gut is telling me it is, but I’m not sure.
For example, our company created a landing page for a webinar that ranked decently well for a keyword, let’s call it “topic”, with a page URL of xyzsite.com/topic. Since it was so popular, but the webinar was over, she suggested I write a blog post with the exact same URL (xyzsite.com/topic) about this topic.
We create blog posts and pages using WordPress on a staging server, so I was able to rename the page URL to /topic-1/ and unpublish this webinar page. I then was able to name the new blog post URL using the exact same URL as the original without it affecting the live site.
As soon as I flipped the switch, all of the old webinar page links pointed to this new blog without a redirect. We didn’t include “Webinar” in the title or meta descriptions for search engines for the webinar page, so we basically copied and pasted this info over for the blog. She insists this is harmless. Thoughts?
