  • Competitor ranking for our content. What do?

A client of mine has content (unfortunately) in the form of PDFs. They recently relaunched their website but have kept most if not all of their content. Some links and file names were definitely changed though as they were not so clued up on how to mitigate negative impact. Now it seems that a lot of their content is being flagged in search console as duplicate content when it is actually the original. A search for the content shows a competitor ranking for it, when they have the exact PDF, even though the PDF has my client’s name and address plastered all over it. Is there anything we can do here to show that we are the original? Does the content need to be remade? I would really love some advice.

Look up the wayback machine to provide proof that your client published the content first. Contact the competitor, and demand that they take down the infringing content. If they don’t, issue a DMCA takedown.

Google doesn’t “flag” duplicate content. They also don’t care who published something first or which version is the original. They will rank the most authoritative version of a piece of content for a given query.
