Client asking to detail how I do so well

Posted by amyers on August 19, 2023 at 5:22 am

I’ve had this client since 2018, very high adspend 7 figures month, so they have had in-house ppc teams as well as me, splitting up accounts.

Without fail every year they fire their internal employees and give me more to manage.

Recently my results have reached levels of “we didn’t even think this was possible”.

Now I’m being asked to record videos detailing my approach to ppc, how I create campaigns, adgroups, how I train smart bidding to perform well (their team keeps failing with smart bidding)

I don’t like the energy behind the request it feels off.

Have anyone ever had something similar?

I just replied “I’ve been doing this for 16 years, and I’ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of my own money testing. There’s a science but also a little art to it. Not something I can really teach. You’ve just got to be good at data analysis and use the data to point you in the right direction.

I don’t want to be a jerk but I’m not about to create a Google Ads internal onboarding course to replace myself lol.

I get this on Upwork a lot when clients interview me trying to get fast tips in the guise of an “interview”. Making videos is ridiculous…insulting really. The information is all out there. Udemy, Coursa Google Skillshop, YouTube videos.

Its like asking a pilot who served in the air force for 10 years and another 20 years flying commercial, can you make a 30 minute video on flying? There is no way to take all that knowledge and put it into a one hour video. SMH. To be honest, I would consider resigning the account. Or simply ride it out until they cut you off. As a matter of fact, I stopped taking client who want “consulting.” Really your selling your skills out for a quick $70 bucks an “session”….until they have everything they need. You hire me to run ads.

Very reasonable response! That’s a pretty sketchy request and we can probably all infer their intentions.

It’s a rude request. Like imagine hiring a plumber and asking him to teach you so you don’t have to hire him next time. At the very least if you do it your teaching rate should be 10x normal rate.

I like to remind them, it’s not what I do that is important – it’s the reasons I do it for.

Videos are valueless because it’s the years of experience that drive results.

Hi newbie here, I do leadgen. I want to ask you which one is the best. Giving series of lander to education prospects. or go straight to cta by researching the right keyword/audience.

Yeah, I absolutely agree with you. They should give you more projects instead of trying to wheedle it out for free so they can fire you later.

Just explain that your knowledge is your intellectual property and you’re not in the business of giving it away.

Yes, this sounds a little fishy to me.

On the one hand, sure maybe they want to improve some internally. But that’s just setting you up to be fired once they learn your secret sauce.

Your response is reasonable. When clients have asked us for training or procedures I explain how we’ve spent 10 years and made huge investments developing our SOPs and its proprietary information… i.e. our competitive edge.

    Good luck with the client.

Just laugh it off when they ask for something like this – being too nice isn’t going to do much for you.

You can conclude three things to make it easier to be confident. 1) They need you. 2) If they can do it themselves and save money they don’t need you 3) If saying no loses you business, you were going to lose the business regardless.

I’ve had that happen to me while contracting with a software company. I thought I was explaining my process to the CEO when really he was using it to train my in-house replacement. When I caught on and he asked me to meet with the guy, I declined. I was annoyed but it turned out okay because I went on to bigger and better things.

Offer to mentor one of their people on ads for a fee.
Build a good relationship with them.
    Earn some money.
Get paid to train a new member of your team once their guy gets good and wants to make some more cash.
