For those saying freelance, it can be a process getting insured while freelancing; which they specifically mentioned working here to gain benefits.

    “….I’ve honestly never enjoyed it”

Granted it sounds like you had a fairly rudimentary position… but the same role for two years? No training or exploration into related areas? Perhaps digital marketing in general is not interesting to you otherwise I feel you would have explored to a higher degree?

    Clean up the resume.
My view is to just be honest. I have this experience, this education, highly motivated to embark on a career in product marketing with these skills…. Here is how and why I would add value to your team etc. Study the target company/product upside down, do an SEO eval and how it relates to product marketing… that’s your angle to make you different than other applicants.

If you are into tech then go into analytics.

If you are not into tech go into SEM or paid social. SEM will transform from specialists to business developers completely soon, same will happen with paid social.

If you dont enjoy working in something, get out, especially SEO. Nothing worse than working with colleagues (especially SEO specialists with no passion) who hates their work and are not interested in what they are doing IMHO. I can not think of anything more fun than doing keyword analysis, I love coming into work and firing up Semrush/KWP/GSC and digging down! I love coming up with new outside the box content plans and love digging into an SF crawl or technical issues. Find your bliss!

I’m starting this process of running from SEO as far as I can, but it’s difficult so I understand perfectly.

I’m in this for around last 6-7 years and I have enough of marketing in general. I work in agency but literally few days ago I resigned, so I still have 3 months to figure it out.

I’m thinking about website design (I know, it’s crowdy) on my own, or 3d design which I know some, but nothing great.

I wish you luck, cause it’s a struggle for sure.

You can try to start your own business as an SEO specialist or consultant. That way you can be your own boss or be the leader of the projects as you have 2 valuable yers of experience.

The other thing, you can start creating a niche website and use your SEO knowledge to monetize it with Google Ads and Affiliate links, from there and your progress and results will be very valuable for you as a personal protect and for possible clients to show them what you can do.

Also, you can consider learning more about Google Ads, as it is really close and related to SEO with the keyword research, and those two will be more valuable vs only SEO.

If you’re wanting to go a bit further out of the sphere of digital marketing, I actually think an SEO position translates well when it comes to soft skills (versus task-oriented). You can shift your focus away from the actual work you did and more about HOW you did it.

    – did you meet deadlines consistently?
    – did you make strategic suggestions/improvements to any internal processes?
    – did you ever interact with clients or present information to them?
    – did you translate high-level sales principles (user intent-matching to keyphrases) into actionable deliverables?
    – did you ever collaborate on a multi-disciplinary team?
    – did you create any type of internal documentation?

Just a couple of things that stand out to me when looking for candidates.
