    Career Change, but…

Posted by Gargoyle0ne on October 5, 2024 at 5:40 pm

Temper my expectations; what are the odds of me making a jump to a Google Ads career starting as a freelancer or part-time remote given that…

I'm British but live in central Europe (this causes some restrictions, as you might imagine). I can't afford to quit my current job, but I can work/study/offer 8 am to 1 pm each day. I can only offer remote.

    Experience:
    BA English language and Lingusitics.
Copywriting qualification, so I know something of the marketing world.
Blog writing exp. Co-run Instagram account of about 16k subs.
Proofreading/editing exp. Published short fiction at pro rates, but that don't count for much…
And I've enjoyed what I've learned about Google Ads so far.

I'm in a rut, fighting with both arms tied behind my back…. is Google ads an avenue worth exploring, or is a non-starter for me?

Pick a better industry in my opinion. PPC has changed drastically in the past five years, and you no longer have anywhere close to the control over performance that you once could get. Everything is going the automation route, and you are setting yourself up for a tough future if you switch to this industry now.

The issue with being a media buyer is it’s like being a financial analyst/investment broker. Like how do you convince other people to give you their money? Hard to do it from 0 without working in an agency or something like that you can leverage and say “i’ve managed this amount of money before so your money is safe with me.

If you don’t already know a lot about Google ads, and you live in Europe, I’m pretty sure you will only be able to get work at entry level wages. I believe entry level PPC wages are low in Europe at least in US terms.

Tbh, take a different route. Being a media buyer is not as lucrative as it used to be. All of the ad platforms are leaning more and more into ai / automation. My guess is within the next 5-10 years media buying will become relatively obsolete. In other words, what may have taken 10 buyers to accomplish in 2017 would only take 1 buyer in 2029 / 2034 and the perceived value of that position will most likely be significantly lower.

Either start your own business, choose a different industry, or get into the creative side of marketing
