So as a SEO expert since 2004 I can tell you that there have been many scary changes to the industry that made me think about finding a new career path. And I did, but I never got out of SEO, I just changed with the times.

AI was a big worry of mine and has been for a few years. But after spending the last 7-8 months learning AI I can tell you that its still far off. AI is a great tool that we as SEO professional can use to free up a lot of our time doing grunt work, but you have to learn how to build commands to get the end result your wanting and very few people know how to do this.

I’m in a similar position as you, where I’ve been PPC for years and currently self-teaching SEO. Part of why I’m learning SEO now is because I want to understand to be able to understand the impacts that may come from AI. I figure having knowledge now will make the learning curve less steep if/when there is a true shift.

So there is nothing wrong with gaining more skills in other channels/areas. Plus, depending on your clients/business goals, you can offer PPC and SEO for a more holistic offering and strategy.

I think you can learn PPC and slowly make your way into a more general Digital Marketing (Manager) role, or Growth, etc. This way you can likely bypass starting at an entry-level since you would have well-rounded skills, understanding of GA4 and data/reporting, websites, etc. which would make you a more suitable strategist/manager.

However, if I had to start my digital career over, I would likely pivot into more hard skills like data analysis or web dev lol. Especially because I’m not as fond of PPC these days.

If anything, I think SEO is going to change to how to rank in the AI generated SERPS! You see featured articles, and resources in that AI search all the time, now I think we’ll be figuring out what work it takes to get there!

I’ve been running an seo company since 2013 and I’m also getting to the point where I’d like to start learning a new field. It sucks dealing with clients, especially as an introvert. I’m able to keep clients but getting new clients isn’t fun. I’m tempted to start an ecom store with my knowledge and experience.

Good post! I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a smidge worried but I haven’t been thinking about it much. I am a bit skeptical about the adoption rate. I’m not sure if people are going to want to change how they search for their information. For instance my group of friends are super tech savvy with careers in tech & production none of these people use ChatGPT or any type of AI in their day to day lives after the initial wow factor.

I left SEO in 2012, but came back in 2018 again but this time I know Google Ads, Meta Ads, and I relearn SEO again. I regret leaving. My best advice to you is to learn PPC. This way you can become a digital marketing manager.
