    Cannabis Advertising an Open Discussion

Posted by jmalone1187 on April 2, 2023 at 6:17 pm

    Hey /r/ppc

Looking to open a discussion on cannabis Advertising across any/all advertising platforms.

I’m new to the industry and am curious how everyone is approaching advertising.

Are you working within the grey areas?

What platforms are you focusing on?

Twitter just opened up their policies, have you tried them, is it working?

I’ve experimented on Google, Microsoft and Twitter and there is certainly an opportunity here but it’s tough to keep some consistency with policy restrictions. What are your thoughts/approaches?

I’ve used partners in the past that did this specifically and then just used programmatic to do it in house as well. Not great results, to be honest. From experience and anecdotal evidence leads me to think a strong email strategy is the way to go.

I work in a restricted industry, certainly less restricted than Cannabis, but still subject to scrutiny. Google is out of the question for you, you can do Facebook with very top-funnel or brand content that doesn’t mention THC or cannabis at all but is enough to get the point across. For example, if you could promote an interview the company did with Tommy Chong or Willie Nelson, “see why Willie loves coming to medmen.” – but that won’t really drive much conversions.

I’d stay away from any shady third party networks people may recommend here.

I would focus most of advertising budget on influencer marketing, industry publications, and developing the heck out of some lead magnets and email campaigns.

You’re honestly in a very tough position to succeed. The major players just have no interest in promoting a federally-illegal substance.

From what I seen Facebook seems to be working they’re doing an ad to a blog/article about health benefits…they would have keyword links and see more button at the end to products

Local or online? Billboards have been effective for the industry at least for local shops and local delivery.

I have worked with Google, Bing, FB & IG, and Tiktok. In native, I have tried Taboola, Zemantha, and Outbrain in native platform. I hadn’t tried but I assume that we have an opportunity on Pinterest as well.

With anything related to such things as Cannabis or CBD, I would say, you gotta be very careful with the creative and copies. And then you definitely have a ton of scope to win in those spaces.

It’s shady, yeah but here also lies the Kacching… so, you know 🙂
