I am launching a blogging website with some of my friends, it’s about telling personal stories and sharing different experiences. We aim to provide a platform for new writers.

We are launching the website in a few weeks and I need to promote it on social media to build up some hype and gather some audience.

This is my first time being involved in such a process and I have only the basic knowledge about social media marketing, I can use some help.

I am thinking about starting promotion of the website on Instagram, LinkedIn & Facebook. I don’t want it to be seem like I’m just promoting the website, I want to add some interest to it.

Any ideas on how I should start the process?

I have launched a few websites. The best way to go about it is to interview or get writers with a good social media following to write for you.

If you are low on resource, you can subscribe to (free) social media marketing courses on Hubspot, LinkedIn, and other sites to bring you up to speed on what you should do, and especially the platforms to target. On the other hand, if you got resource, seek help from a social media manager. But you may also have to look for writers with SEO knowledge to craft articles and blog posts to help your website be found on search.

Focus on one platform first, depending on age group. Once you have mastered the first one to a degree, as far as process, then move to the next. Good luck.

From what you’ve described, I don’t think LinkedIn is a platform you should spend time with to promote the site. At least not yet. Twitter has a huge writing community, so ignoring that platform would be a mistake. Facebook is okay. Instagram might not work well depending on what kind of content you’ll have to work with. You can’t put clickable links in post captions, so you’d be relying pretty much just on one link in the bio. Plus, since Instagram is a visual platform, you’d need original, engaging images and videos to get any kind of traction.

Before you do any platform building, though, you need to outline who your target audience is, what you want them to do (ie, is it to just read your content, or go to your site and contact you about contributing, etc), and what some general goals are from your social media presence. That’s going to help inform how you set up and structure your content strategy.

I regularly provide social media strategy guidance to writers, so let me know if you have specific questions.
