  • Blog hosted on company domain vs on a subdomain

    Hello,

I was wondering what are the benefits of having a company blog on the same domain (mywebsite. com /blog /article) vs on a subdomain (blog. mywebsite. com /article) or even a complete different domain (newnameblog . com).

I guess having on same domain would help with domain authority but might create some cannibalised content with my product landing pages. And having the blog on a subdomain might be good for backlinks

Very interested to know your thoughts on this.

    Thank you!

The standard is having it as a subdirectory. No real benefits from fragmenting it. Regardless, Google is smart enough to know that the subdomain belongs to the domain anyway.

Much better to have it in the same domain- you will keep visitors on the site longer. The pro to having a subdomain is a separate install of the CMS (Ex WordPress). That allows you flexibility with access to the backend, a different design, and ability to have clean categories (some not so great developers try to cannibalize blog post categories to pull in data to certain parts of the site when they should have just created a separate content type). Negatives are extra maintenance. Really it’s about organizational set-up and politics.

The other thing is different language versions – subdomains are great for that and would be ideal to have a separate install to make that easy to maintain.
