Better attribution in UA than GA4?

Posted by SoyElmasETu on May 9, 2023 at 10:47 am

Like the title says, I know that there is a difference in attribution between the three ways of tracking Google Ads, but I’m seeing weird values in the accounts.

I’m running Google Ads for a few small clients and we’re doing the transition from UA to GA4 for reporting. The primary optimization is done using the Google Ads Conversion Tracking which, according to Google, is the most advanced one. So now I’m trying to compare the data to show the client the differences so that he’ll be up to speed in case he sees sudden increases or decreases in reported revenue.

My huge problem is that I’m seeing bigger differences between UA and GA4 than Google Ads Conversion Tracking and GA4. Meaning, I’m seeing almost as many conversions and revenue coming in from UA and Google Ads Conversion Tracking while GA4 is lagging behind massively, like 20%-25%. The clients are only running Google Ads, so no Social Media or other stuff.

Is this normal, due to the attribution model, or I should ask someone to check the tracking?

Thank you for posting this. I’m also having the same problem in my account. Would love to hear any solution.

Make sure you have setup GA4 conversions action as Primary. In my case even though it is setup to primary im still observing a discrepency in GA4 conversion number

UA and GA4 don’t measure or do attribution the same way. They are going to show different results. You won’t get them to match up anywhere near 100%.

Is Google Ads Conversion tracking still the way to go? Or are GA4 conversions better these days?

Historically UA would completely under-report conversions vs a site with Google Ads own conversion tracking setup, not sure if that’s still the most ideal route?

I have the same problem and is driving me crazy.

I can understand everything about how attribution is different in GA4, but good luck telling that to your clients lmao

One thing to keep in mind is that GA4 uses a different event-based tracking model, which might explain some of the discrepancies you’re seeing. The attribution window and modeling also play a role. You might want to double-check your conversion tracking setup in GA4 to ensure it aligns with your Google Ads campaigns. Also, reviewing the attribution models being used in both UA and GA4 can shed light on the differences. For those looking to dig deeper into web analytics dashboards, there’s a useful template on Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/1012747034939227249/) that could provide more insights and options.
