  • Best practices in building URL structures for directory-type sites? (details provided)

Let’s say I am building a directory of all types of licensed construction workers, where each license (e.g. HVAC, Electrician, CDL) has its own unique properties. The goal of the site is not to find a new construction worker, it’s to be able to look someone up and find their license info. And eventually, to be one of the first organic search results when someone google’s a license number to find the info associated with it.

I’m trying to figure out the most SEO-friendly link structures for this.

    Here are a few options:

    .com/hvac-license/1234567890

    .com/cdl-license/1234567890

    \_\_

    .com/hvac-license/state/city/john-smith/1234567890

    .com/cdl-license/state/city/john-smith/1234567890

    \_\_

    .com/state/city/hvac-license/john-smith/1234567890

    .com/state/city/cdl-license/john-smith/1234567890

    \_\_

Etc. etc, with each part of the path having some relevant content (e.g. .com/hvac-license could be a search for hvac licenses, or .com/california/san-diego would search all licenses in that city…. or something that follows a similar technique).

What should my considerations be? Anything that’s definitively a best practice or I should absolutely stay clear from? I am soon connecting with someone who is much more knowledgeable than me on this, but I’d like to learn more before going into that conversation.

    Thanks

I think a lot depends on the structure of your website and how users will use it. Its also important to consider how unique the content will be between diff cities. If the content uniqueness is low there is a chance of being penalized for low-value content and some of your pages simply wont be indexed.

Do you have competitors in your niche? What is there in the search results for your queries? How do other webmasters do it?
