Hi! I’m a relatively new free lancer , 19F and I was wondering how I could start fr lancing my work or if I could ever make money off of it. I am very interested in social media marketing and although I can’t picture myself doing it as a career, I would love to do it on the side! What got me interested in free lancing was all of my friends telling me that I should consider managing a social media page or helping someone run theirs because they think my work looks very professional and aesthetic. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to start or how I could even tell if my work is worth selling.

It’s freelancing, not free lancing or fr lancing. Understanding the colloquial terms will help you in any field as well as typing it out shows that you know and care not to use shorthand.

Start by volunteering with a nonprofit you like- nonprofits always need social media help. That will help build your portfolio which then you can take to get paying clients!

Even if it is just a side hustle, it will need a lot of effort and time . Do it only if you wish to and are ready to put in the work. It’s not an easy field.

I suggest researching social media freelancing. It’s a bit hard to break into, but it’s possible. If you lack a marketing degree (which based on your age and what you described, I assume you do) then the next best thing is to be able to prove you can do the job. I suggest developing a portfolio of projects you make that demonstrate your skills. A great place to keep this portfolio is your own website. WordPress and Wix allow free options to do this, or you can pay to utilize more of their features. It’s also helpful to learn certain hard skills, like using Meta Business Manager and Canva, to name a couple easy ones. Any tools you learn should be demonstrated with projects you store in your portfolio. Next step is networking and sending pitches. If you’d like more specifics, feel free to message me and I’d be happy to give you more in-depth tips. Best of luck!

    Hi!

-First, join all freelancing platforms and create as many gigs as possible!

-The more specific a niche is, the more likely you are to get work! For eg. rather than “Social Media Marketer , if you go for “Digital Marketing expert for Cafes and Restaurants” you are most likely to be looked for and interacted with for work!

    – Create good digital presence and establish topical expertise by constant interaction, engagement and posting on social media. This will organically get you better inbound leads!

    -Join good subreddits!

    All the best!

I started by managing small local businesses, but that was when social media for businesses was a very new thing and everyone thought “just hire a millennial.” Now there’s a lot more to it.

If you have a knack for content creation, you just need to work on learning how each platform’s algorithm works, important stats and where to access them, and how to calendar out your content. Clients like views and engagement, but they love conversion. Think not just about how to make people money as well as making them look cool.
