Social media now-a-days requires you to reveal tons of identifying info about yourself to make a profile that stays with us as we move on. It’s used to determine if we are real or not. This however also limits our comfortability and safety to speak freely and truthfully. Limits our ability to connect with strangers because all our identifying information is tied to our profile and people we care about. If you want to engage in any conversation with someone else on social media or the internet it is essentially required to reveal a large degree of personal identifying information to simply chat. Of course this is also because of spammers, scammers, and creeps. However, these things are not new and have been around since the birth of the internet yet since facebook and instagram it has almost been made a necessity to tie all of one’s personal info to engage in any discussion with others. I find facebook, instagram, and linkedin allows you to connect with people you already know and stay in touch but does not facilitate new connections or interactions that last.

Of course you can make fake profiles to comment and message things as freely as you want but no-one listens or pays you any mind when your account seems fake with no friends or followers. The next issue is Tinder-like sites and apps that markets it’s ability to help you connect with people locally but the concept is so superficial. Physical pictures of people you must choose to like or dislike.. Great way to start healthy relationships and program our way of thinking. Reddit is possibly the closest thing to a free mans social discord and attempt to connecting with people locally as well as speaking freely. I have yet to connect with people on here or message but I suppose there is potential with local forums or chats. There was a brief period where Myspace met this need where people could create unique fake profiles, join forums and groups, and have meaningful discussions. I did this with anime and gaming growing up. Today you need friends/followers and various identifying information to do the same thing perhaps so that all our actions and thoughts can be tracked and linked to our identity. The platforms have convinced many that this is the only way to screen off fake profiles/scammers/spammers however there was a time when people would simply report these profiles and they would actually be banned or require to prove realness. Has anyone else noticed these issues or are their outlets for this I am unaware of? Does anyone find any of the current social medias to facilitate creativity, meaningful discussions, and connecting with new people locally?
