  • Are my expectations for this social media role reasonable?

    Hi everyone

For starters, I think my post falls within the rules because I am not posting about a specific job (to recruit or to amplify the posting itself), however if I’m out of bounds please do let me know : )

I’d love some perspective on if my expectations for a job I am preparing to post are accurate. I oversee communications for a mid-sized B2B organization with about $100 million in revenue. We have an active social media presence across four channels (Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook), meaning we post 4-7 times a week per channel using different content methods and we do engage with our audience. We launched our channels in house but turned to an external agency for support when COVID hit. I am now looking to bring this work in house as part of a new role we are creating on my team focused on digital communications. Ideally, this person would manage our social content as well as project manage some video and digital display materials.

As I am scoping this role, my initial estimates say the role would require approximately 20 hrs per week for social media management. This would include creating content for the four channels, monitoring channels for inquiries/comments, and conducting light, proactive engagement with our target audiences. Our social presence is purely brand awareness (no direct sales or recruitment). It’s important to me to be realistic in my scope so this new role and my team are set up for success.

Is my estimate reasonable? Is 20 hrs per week for four social channels realistic? Am I over estimating how much time is needed? Under estimating?

You’re grossly underestimating. I do this with the help of a designer and copywriter and manage an outside PR agency for 40hrs per week.

20hrs you’re asking for rushed work with high stress on your employee, especially if they are taking over from an agency and expected to maintain 4-7 times a week whilst learning your product.

20 hours a week sounds about right for managing those four channels. But remember, some weeks might need more time, others less. And the person’s experience will play a big part too. Oh, and don’t forget the video and digital project management – that’s extra time.

I would say you’re underestimating. If you are looking at them to create about 16- 28 original piece of content every week and want it to be quality content I think you have to estimate between 20 min to 1 hr per pc. So that would be between 5-20 hours just for the content creation. Then you want them to monitor the channel, interact and engage with people (about 1-2,5 hour a day depending on your following) – some week your 20 hour will be fine (with basic content and minimal interaction you’d be at 10-15 hours). Other week you’d be looking at 30 hours a week minimum.
