  • Ahrefs question – keyword difficulty 2 but all top 10 sites on SERP over 40 DR

Posted by D_UK_TH on September 15, 2023 at 11:15 am

Not sure why Ahrefs is showing me keywords difficulty 2 on a keyword with all top 10 in the SERP higher than a 40 DR?

I noticed only 3 of the pages on the top 10 have a word count, meaning the others are most likely commercial pages with not much text…… does this give me a chance of ranking with a well written blog?

    Cheers

DR is Ahrefs metrics. Just like Moz’s DA.

Both of them are hitting Google API for keyword analysis.

It’s because domain ratings (whatever metric you want to use… DA, DR, etc) have absolutely nothing to do with the actual pages that are ranking.

My take on this is that because it is a low kw difficulty without backlinks, google tries to find this keyword and show in results websites that have high authority – DA with the keyword inside.

For me yes you have a high chance to go on 1st page if you will do SEO correctly.

Keyword difficulty – now that’s another great metric. Shouldn’t it be the case that in order to calculate the difficulty of ranking a keyword you should know the explicit weights of the ranking factors? And since you don’t, well, good luck. And if they can, why doesn’t Ahrefs or the others just sell the weights or just use them to build an endless amount of websites and sell the leads themselves?

Ahrefs and SemRush can be wrong and inaccurate at times. Take their ratings with a pinch of salt, it’s good to save time and as a reference, but you’ll still need to do due diligence like what you just did.

If my memory doesn’t fail me, Ahrefs based their KD on the number of backlinks to the top 10 pages for the keyword.

That’s why if you put the same keyword in Semrush and Ubersuggest you will get different KD scores. And that’s because each one has their own method of calculating it.

So I won’t take the scores too serious.

Let me share with you how I give myself a good chance of ranking for a keyword.

    1. Check the first 10 sites ranking for the keyword. Can my site compete with them (You can use DA here). But if you have done SEO enough, you have that intuition to know.

    2. How many of them have the main keyword in their title tag. The less the better.

    3. Can I write better content than them? (It’s not by word count.)

    I hope this helps.

Look at the traffic and traffic potential columns. Then check their backlinks to the certain page. The you can decide if it’s worth to go after that keyword.

I have ranked many pages even to featured snippets without even backlinks regardless of the competitor domain authority.

    Always remember, “Content is King”.
