  • Advice On Hiring Social Media Managers?

I work for a marketing company and we are looking to hire in house social media managers to handle client accounts. They will be creating the content, captions, scheduling posts, engagement, growth and implementing a strategy. I’m having a tough time finding quality candidates and wonder if I’m looking with the wrong thing, or perhaps this is too much to put on one person? My job title calls for a “Social Media Manager” and I’m starting to think that is perhaps the wrong job title for this position? Could anyone give me some advice on how I can find the right candidates for this role, I would greatly appreciate it.

We just hired for this position, same title. The applications that submitted were a lot of super random things, it seemed a lot of people assumed the job was sitting on FB/IG/TT all day. the woman we hired came in with a presentation of past campaigns she had done, and solid engagement numbers. She’s also very analytics driven, maybe include something like that in your needs?

It looks like your more looking for a Content Strategist or Digital Marketing Manager. “Social Media Manager” oftentimes connotes an entry level position with lower stakes and skills needed. If you were providing most of the content, this title may be more appropriate.

However, the person you’re looking for would need a higher level of skill in design, photo editing, and copywriting, as well as social media marketing skills and knowledge about common KPIs and data analysis. This is a higher skill based job and the title (and salary) should reflect that.

Good luck finding the right person!

I might hire someone who has experience as a broadcast journalist (producer, writer), or someone with strong media relations skills in addition to social media experience. The reason why is that much of the value a good social media manager can give you — in addition to planning and posting really solid paid & organic content — is that they can give your team the ability to (1) take advantage of trending topics & breaking news in real time, (2) develop new relationships for your brand with stakeholders (like journalists or well-aligned third party groups) that are interested in your segment on that platform, as well as (3) the chance to curate and share meaningful content that appeals to all of your stakeholders. (Content curated shares should be about 1/3 of your feed) Whomever you decide to hire, good luck and be well.
