1 year in PPC and I can’t move forward in my career.
Posted by Agitated-Airport5220 on November 26, 2023 at 2:01 pmToday, marks the 1st year as a PPC Specialist in an agency. In this year I learnt G-Ads from scratch and I’ve tried many types campaigns mostly were search & pmax.
But I feel that I’m not confident in myself hitting the target. If I hit the target I don’t know why it happened. If not I’m not sure how can I solve the issue. I’m aware of the normal optimizations and fixes that are made in google ads dashboard and that kind of things, but I’m not sure what to do next or how can I get improved.
My current learning routine is to keep up with the industry trends and learning about anything I find out about.
What should I do now to level up my expertise? Any recommendations?
Edit: Thank you for your comments. For sure I haven’t mastered Google Ads yet. The correct phrase to use is “I’ve became comfortable with Google Ads layout”

Read all the blog posts listed here, but ignore any advice containing the word “SKAG”.

GuestNovember 26, 2023 at 2:27 pmcome on dude
first you say you “mastered the platform” but you don’t know why you reach your target or if not , why you don’t?
sorry to tell you this pal, but what you’re lacking is experience….……..look, I’m about to sound like a douche…..but whatever….
with 1 year of experience, you’ve not master google ads, because it’s constantly changing, so you have to adapt to it, I’ve been doing this for over 10 years, and I don’t say I mastered the platform…..
you think you’re stuck with one year? dude, you have to be patient, you’re like those clients that will ask for results the day after you’ve implemented the campaign
if you’re in charge of one client and you think you’ve mastered it, ask to be involved in another client, a smaller or bigger one, one that’s on a different industry, you have to gain more experience so you can grow professionally
good luck op

GuestNovember 26, 2023 at 2:46 pmSome of the stuff that’s hard to explain has to do with the market you are in, what you are advertising and what your competition is. You could optimize perfectly but if you have competition they could be doing the same thing and it’s going to affect you.
I’d say focus on learning not only how to work google ads but also how to analyze the data and try to draw conclusions based on what you are seeing and then act on that.

GuestNovember 26, 2023 at 3:09 pmAt one year in, now you can focus on understand why things happen and how you can influence them. Knowing about features & settings is not the same as using them. You need to focus on looking at and auditing ad accounts to help them hit the target. Plus learn how to look into accounts to understand why they are or are not hitting the target. Until then you have not mastered anything in paid ads. Just pushing buttons is not enough.

GuestNovember 26, 2023 at 3:24 pmDepending on your background I would start to expand your knowledge to more general marketing. This is extremely useful when onboarding a new client to understand how their business works more intuitively. To get “great” at this you will need many years experience.
If you want to up your Google Ads game to the next level I would take the God Tier Ads course.

GuestNovember 26, 2023 at 3:42 pmIt seems like maybe you are ready to add more strategy.
Study conversion funnels, copywriting, and persuasive marketing. Look into behavioral segmentation and contextual marketing. Taking things to the next level, IMO, will involve combining data analytics with knowledge of human behavior.

GuestNovember 26, 2023 at 4:34 pmSo you mastered YouTube, GDN, Search, Shopping, PMAX, Gmail, Demand Gen……all in one year? My guy, go apply to be Google’s next CEO.

GuestNovember 26, 2023 at 4:34 pm15 years in and imposter syndrome is still a thing. You’re also nowhere near a master. I’ve not mastered all of Google Ads. Video ads are a massive mystery to me and I think I’ve seen a grand total of 2 conversions out of them in my 15 years. And with Google now blackboxing a ton of data, and throwing GA4 on us and saying “fuck you” to any documentation or ease of use like we had for 20 years of Google Analytics, it only gets more difficult to understand.
Sometimes things just work. Sometimes they just don’t. Lately, we’ve seen a lot of market factors value into a lot of why shit just stinks right now.

GuestNovember 26, 2023 at 4:37 pm“1 year” “mastered the platform” then “not confident in myself” “don’t know how to hit the target”. I think you are deeply confused and not nearly as experienced as you think you are

GuestNovember 26, 2023 at 5:39 pmCan I ask how you landed that job? I am trying to get started in it but it seems so hard to find and get an entry level job for this or any marketing job with even some paid media/paid search/PPC. Open to anyone else who knows how to get started.

GuestNovember 26, 2023 at 6:37 pmSorry friend but you’ve definitely not mastered the platform in a year, and if you think you have that’s a sign you’re actually a lot more beginner than you actually believe you are.
I’d connect with some of the experts on LinkedIn, follow and learn from them. They’re very generous with their knowledge. Get exposure to different types of accounts. Read about and try new things (with client permission!). And I’d recommend a conference or two, they’re always amazing for new learning.

GuestNovember 26, 2023 at 8:03 pmI know how you feel.
You feel stuck the same way i do, unfortunately we have to be patient and develop out analysis and try to figure what works and why.
I also would recommend you to learn social ads. So you can better understand the ecossystem. And remember there are some cases that a client will not have sucess with google ads, while in other cases they will have sucess regardless.
Work on different clients and try also social ads.

GuestNovember 26, 2023 at 8:23 pmMy honest opinion (now a lot of it is AI based) is that experience and intuition is the most valuable asset. That can’t be learned. Will come in time.

GuestNovember 26, 2023 at 9:10 pmI felt exactly like this because I was the same, I learned myself and got a chance at a small agency who it turns out knew less than me, quickly I was the most knowledgable person there which meant I couldnt gain anymore knowledge.
My advice to you is to do what I did, move to another company where there are people who know more than you, then you will learn and get better.
Dont settle for thinking you have already hit the ceiling.
