A youtube blog post outlining their TikTok competitor was posted briefly and then quickly removed. It was dated March 18th, but posted yesterday.

Here’s the TLDR on what they shared regarding Shorts:

    * Just like TikTok you’ll be able to string video clips together and record with music, and add text overlays.
    * They’ve got a feature allowing for users to sample audio from other Shorts to “remix it into your own creation.” That’s pretty interesting and at least something slightly different from TikTok.
    * You’ll be able to tap into the extensive YouTube library & have “the ability to use audio from videos across YouTube.”
    * They’ll have millions of songs available from 250 labels and publishers, such as UMG, Sony, Warner, etc.
    * Easy artist discovery, “if you hear a snippet of a song on Shorts, you can easily find the full song, watch the music video, or learn more about the artist —all on YouTube. And it works both ways.”
    * Viewers will see a carousel of YouTube Shorts on the main homepage (something that has already been occurring). Tapping opens up a fullscreen mode a la TikTok

Additionally, they stated that they’re “actively working” on monetizing features in order to “reward creators for their content.”

thanks for sharing this update. Tbh, I think that shorts hurt YouTube channels because viewers get accustomed to short videos and the average view duration of normal-length content suffers

I wonder if this means music creators will get royalties from this feature too, going under YouTube’s existing agreements with performance rights societies (even though the royalty rate is a bit shit). Would be better than TikTok, which doesn’t compensate music creators at all.

I’ve heard they offer huge organic reach with it. But in the past they said the views don’t count towards your channel, still it would be nice to monetise. I’d give it a shot but I know they’ll probably give it up eventually, honestly everyone wants to be TikTok now but you can’t stop them.
