Yesterday YouTube rolled out dedicated pages for hashtags.

According to their announcement, “anyone searching for a specific hashtag on YouTube, either the desktop or mobile app, will see a new dedicated page that only contains videos with the hashtag, which are sorted to keep the best videos at the top.”

The format looks familiar. It’s similar to TikTok’s hashtag pages.

This isn’t the only change. This is part of a much broader initiative to take on TikTok with their Shorts competitor.  YouTube has evolved a great deal over the last 12 months.

TikTok style features have steadily been added to the mobile app. Some of the most prominent adjustments include:

    1) Emphasizing categories vs search
    2) Curating content experiences

    3) Providing content prompts

Additionally, Shorts (ie videos less than 60 seconds long) have begun appearing on the mobile home page.

Does YouTube have reason to be so worried about TikTok? Possibly.

In China ByteDance (TikTok/Douyin owner) and Kuaishou (TikTok style competitor) were the only two companies to grow their share of mobile app consumption last year.

Together the two account for nearly one-quarter of all mobile activity.

Clearly there is something about the short form vertical video format that is inherently sticky
