  • Will Instagram still be a mainstream platform by 2030?

It continues to blow my mind how a platform that has existed since 2010 has continued to see “explosive growth” and no signs of slowing down, even though its model clearly has become flawed for its users ever since Facebook bought in 2012. The new shopping button on the app was the “final nail in the coffin” for many people, but it still wasn’t enough to get a considerable amount of people to abandon the platform.

What will it take for the next social media platform to take over Instagram’s and even TikTok’s market share? I’m worried that Instagram is going to continue being the go-to platform even in 2030, but then again a lot can change in 9-10 years.

all it takes is one new or smaller platform to introduce a new fun feature, and then it gets bought out by a monopoly like Facebook or Twitter. “PlatformX allows you to share your thoughts with people, in auditory form, via quick recordings, no video. Cameron Diaz uses it on the toilette!” Boom. Disney buys that shit up and it’s the new Twitter within a week.

Facebook is giving VR a push. It will be interesting to watch if they will incorporate Instagram in there.

Think about the infinite scroll on your phone. Well, if VR gets widely adopted, think about how immersive that UX design may be. Walking through an endless corridor of content? Jumping from a room (or even a planet) to another based on hashtags or communities? You get the picture.

I am not sure about Instagram, but I am sure that the platform that adopts VR will be the future. If you think we love going on our phones for that dopamine hit, who knows how immersive/addictive customizable virtual worlds will be?

I guess in today’s world you can’t predict stuff like that, particularly in 10 years of time, look at that clubhouse shit, it reached a $1B in valuation in so short time. I wouldn’t bet that Instagram will still be at the top in 10 years

Instagram is increasingly becoming more p2p not everyone has money for that. I doubt it’ll be as big. Social medias and companies in general come and go.

No one is able to predict this movements, however given the shifts Instagram has made in the way we receive content and the huge amounts of publicity I have the theory that the audience will shift and It will become more of an online catalog/e-commerce website for startup brands and business.
Like think about it, everyday more SB join instagram and even manage sales through the platform, they post their catalogs, their publicity, etc. People are begging to use Instagram more as a business strategy platform than a social media platform.
