Which platform you see as remaining relevant and dominant in the next 10 years? Or perhaps a new platform you have faith in becoming exponentially relevant?

I haven’t deeply thought about all other platforms but I intuitively gravitate towards Youtube as the most unreplacable, at least in social and content.

As a consumer, Youtube is the one website/app I receive the most value from and don’t feel bad after spending too much time exploring and engaging different topics on there.

I think they’re well positioned as a business because:

The community. Perhaps youtube has the most diverse community of watchers and creative users. Even the comment sections of youtube videos are pure gold in and of themselves. Additionally, their community of creators rely on youtube for their living and many businesses are plugged into youtube and rely on its ecosystem.

The algorithm. TikTok does give a glimpse of better alternatives but I do wonder if TikTok’s algorithm is truly better than Youtube’s? I have found my TikTok feed match my friends’ feed a lot more while our youtube feeds remain highly personal and different from each other. Maybe it goes back to the diversity of youtube’s content.

I’d love to hear your take.

I agree with you on YouTube’s longevity over the other channels. Especially as all channels now have stories style format of video, abs eventually selfie posting culture will die a death (he hopes). However Youtube potentially has a compelling competition in the form of Theta (cryptocurrency project). Worth checking out their plans for video content platforms and how this could threaten YouTube’s proposition or work with them in collaboration somehow. Great post! Thought provoking matey!

I think all the major players will still be giants in 10 years, except for Facebook. Somehow I can imagine a mass exodus from FB like the Digg migration to Reddit.

But I think decentralized platforms may start to emerge in 10 years. We’re entering an era of a crackdown of freedom of expression online, especially as the US Congress cracks down on social media companies, and perhaps the market will in a decentralized way try to meet the need for free speech.

Or perhaps we are in a golden age of internet freedoms. Enjoy it while it lasts.

The ones who reward the content creators the most will probably be relevant, as there will be enough stuff to keep everyone entertained. Also, by reward, I am counting everything; from social status, ego boost, to paid promotions.

One thing to watch out for would be Facebook’s play on VR. The pandemic has made a lot of people adapt to staying in and living indoors. If their play on VR succeeds, I can only imagine how immersive they may become. Not to mention, their latest VR product requires a Facebook account to use in the first place.

These companies are wonderful with noticing the “next-big-thing” before the “thing” itself establishes. Instagram’s acquisition by Facebook is a close example of this.

Google is a whole different monster though. They and Amazon will be interesting to watch to see if they will evolve the smart home devices to become more interactive or even form communities through them. They practically manage the information flow so I wouldn’t be surprised if they attempt to have additional platforms under their names too. Google Plus is a good proof of this and Amazon’s initiatives in MMORPG games are too.

I do personally think that the Tik Tok algorithm is insanely good, probably better than YouTube. But I also think that YouTube has waayyyyyy more stay power than Tik Tok, and like you said than most other social platforms. I think YouTube does a great job at evolving with the times, and with what is relevant, where other platforms fail to do that. I also wonder if at some point Tik Tok will have similar issues as Vine did. I guess only time will tell.

Twitter (or if they continue to censor, a twitter variant) will be dominant. It is the only long lasting platform that has not devolved or evolved into a fundamentally different platform than from which it began. The infrastructure and idea were designed better than the rest.

Instagram will become better at commerce and stop pretending to be a good place to interact with friends. It will specialize in brands and companies like the online mall of today. You hang out there sometime.

For our personal lives, a separate network will emerge.

This is tough question for 2 reasons:

    1. There is the whole idea of the big guys getting bigger, so whoever controls the market now has a high probability of still being a market leader in the future. Especially since tech is no longer a new field like it was back in the late 90s and early 2000s it’s easier for big companies to grow in a more established market.

    2. The whole nature of technology is based on innovation so while there are market leaders if someone comes up with a new innovative product that consumers will like better then there is no reason why they can’t be a market leader.

Short answer: we won’t know the answer to this question till 2030.
