I hear content creators saying the have to keep posting constantly in order to grow on Instagram!

What is the reason for this?

Why is their organic growth hindered if they stop posting for a while?

I mean would you follow an account that hasn’t posted in a year? I personally wouldn’t and I can’t imagine I’m the only one

I think the answer is more about Social Media Algorithms more than anything.

Most platforms push forward new content. So if you’re content is old, you’re less likely to be promoted.

That being said, my phone was stolen about 2 weeks ago, so I took a break from posting on Instagram. My follower count fluctuated around 1.1K, it didn’t see any massive drops, nor did it see massive increases. But this doesn’t bother me.

My engagement obviously took a nose dive, but with no new content coming out, why would existing followers re-comment on my existing posts.

The algorithms punish you for taking breaks. They won’t push your content out if you don’t post every damn day. TikTok is the worst for this but IG does it too.

Constant new content means more active users. These platforms are competing with each other. Programming their algorithms to encourage daily content helps their metrics.

As others have mentioned, the algorithm gets used to an account that posts a lot. And it gets used to an account that doesn’t post often.

Instagram specifically favors authority accounts, newsworthy and trending content production, so it encourages the ones pumping out good content to continue (or risk losing auhority for slowing down).

For Instagram, the algorithm settles into whatever consistency and speed you’re using their service at.

In my experience, with Instagram and Facebook at least, posts that are made after a period of inactivity get a lot more engagement than posts that are made a couple times a week. I think it’s because the networks will notify people that you’ve posted for the first time in a while–I’ve gotten those notifications myself about other accounts that I follow. Not sure how that ought to factor into a larger strategy, but I’ve sometimes used this behavior intentionally if there’s something I plan to post that I want to get lots of engagement, I’ll pause those channels for a couple weeks before I post that one, and then it almost always beats my average engagement by 50-100%.

Algorithms. And bc people have the attention span of a gnat-always looking for the next thing and that’s what keeps your traffic hummin

From what I noticed, the current algorithms that we have in place rewards users who have consistent activity by showing their content to more people more frequently.

I stopped posting on Instagram for a couple weeks and my engagement rate massively dropped on Instagram… sometimes you need to choose your mental health or growing on social media – it’s stressful.

I stopped posting regularly and then took a long break.

Recently more companies want to see links to my social media profiles. Now, I’m trying to resuscitate the main ones to look as if I have a life.

At the moment, It feels like I’m trying to catch up to the algorithm train that left the station long ago. Even the crickets left.
