  • What resources do you recommend to learn SEO fundamentals

Posted by IntelligentHome2342 on March 5, 2026 at 2:49 pm

Hey guys, my website is 7 months old and I started on the SEO journey for the past 3 months, currently I mainly learn from Reddit and chatGPT and then apply the learning on my website.

Other than practicing, I’d like to take the learning more seriously and more systematically. Any free online courses and resources you would recommend? Someone recommended Google digital marketing cert before, is that one effective?

    Thanks in advance.

One tip I can give you is that Google doesn’t have a specific word count to target, but when creating content, think about a random surfer. Answer everything the query needs above the fold with clinical precision, as much as you can, without sounding too mechanical. Be conversational; don’t write novels.

One of the biggest problems with many sites, and something you can exploit to beat competitors, is the extra fatty fluff contaminating the SERPs. Pages are bloated with filler content that adds zero value to the user.

I like to call it SEO Cholesterol. Too many sites are clogged with it, and it’s exactly why some users on the internet append “reddit” to Google’s search bar. They’re skipping your content because it doesn’t respect their time.

If your basics are clear then you should move towards technical seo.

You should learn backlinking properly to build your website authority fast.

I would suggest you start with:

**Google’s SEO Starter / Digital Marketing courses**: Google’s own training is a good baseline because it explains how search engines work and how Google. After that go for advance level.

I always loved watching the Ahref’s videos.

Also I don’t know how out of date the old “Whiteboard Friday’s” are from Moz but those were amazing too.

I would recommend LearningSEO.io. Aleyda has curated some excellent resources there, and it is all free.

Semrush Academy is another pretty solid source to wrap your head around the basics.

Neil Patel if your’re true newbie.

I also like Ahrefs videos. They’re simple and useful, but a little bit promotional

Apart from SEO, I would suggest you to take a look at AI Visibility or some people called them AEO or GEO. AI has subtly change how people search information. Instead of just googling keywords and getting back a list of sites, people asked question to AI, and AI collate information and presented a relevant answer.

Traditional SEO aims for ranking in search results while AI Visibility is more about how do you convince/help AI tools to use your information in coming up the answer.

Not saying SEO is dead – it’s still important, but getting yourself rank number 1 in search results is no longer the holy grail.

I’d actually start with the Google Search Central SEO Starter Guide. It’s pretty straightforward and comes directly from Google, so it explains the fundamentals really well.

For more structured learning, HubSpot’s free SEO course is also pretty solid. It’s beginner‑friendly and walks through things like keyword research, on‑page SEO, and content strategy.

Besides courses, I’d recommend just reading a few SEO blogs regularly. Moz, Ahrefs, and Backlinko have a lot of practical guides that are easy to follow.

the best way to learn is to build and rank your own site. There are too many resources online from people that have never ranked a page. Spin up your site, write some content and try to build links. This will teach you more than any other online resource.
