  • What if social media platform was designed to reward depth of thinking?

    Hi,

I’ve been thinking a lot about how social media shapes the way we think.

    Most platforms reward:

    • quick reactions
    • outrage
    • short attention spans

So I started experimenting with a different idea.

What if a platform was designed to reward depth of thinking instead of speed?

    • post deeper thoughts and questions
    • participate in structured debates
    • explore ideas around AI, philosophy, psychology and society
    • gain reputation based on contribution quality

    So I'm curious:

Would you use a platform like this?

Or do you think social media will always drift toward short content?

    Happy to hear honest opinions.

I think the problem is that every platform optimizes for engagement, but engagement isn’t the same as attention. What if instead of likes and shares, the core metric was literally how long people spend watching your content? And not in a hidden algorithmic way — in a visible, real-time way. Like a countdown timer that the audience directly controls. That would completely change what kind of content people create.

The idea is great. The challenge is human behavior…
People *say* they want depth, but platforms grow on low effort participation. Quick reactions scale, deep thinking takes energy.

The real question isn’t whether people want depth – it’s how you design incentives so thoughtful people actually stay n contribute.

My algorithm is already this. So I do not think it’s social media shaping us; it’s we who are shaping social media. Interest media. Go on my teenagers’ feed; it’s probably brain rot stuff.

That sounds good. I’m working on a social media platform with a similar intent. It sounds like they work differently though. I’m getting close to launching. Not sure if I can promote the URL here, but DM me if you want if you (OP), or anyone else wants to join the waitlist.

What if social media rewarded thinking instead of outrage? I built an experiment and just launched a Kickstarter.

For years I’ve been frustrated with how social media works.

    Most platforms reward:
    • quick reactions
    • outrage
    • viral noise

So naturally, that’s the kind of content people create.

I wanted to experiment with something different.

I built a platform called ReversedWorld where discussions can evolve into structured debates and the feed tries to reward depth of conversations rather than just reactions or likes.

There’s also an Expert Hub where verified experts can host debates in their fields.

The platform is already live and people are starting to experiment with it.

Today I launched a Kickstarter to support further development and help grow the community.

If you’re curious about the idea or want to support the experiment you can check it out here:

But I’m genuinely curious what people here think.

Do you think changing the incentives of a platform could actually change the quality of discussions online?
