  • What do you do when your client’s business name is taken on Social Media?

I’ve had some clients, new businesses and old, whose names have been taken (not on purpose ofc) and they were not fond of using “.” or underlines, etc.

What did you guys do in such situations, what are some good alternatives or words to add to the username that keep the username as relevant to the business as possible?

The trick part is when they want the same username for multiple social media platforms.

I can suggest one thing if the name is taken you can just add the country name at the end of the business name. Suppose the business name is Alpha and it’s from Singapore. You can write
like **AlphaSG.** I guess it is the best option if they want to avoid Full stop or underline.

I observed that in my city a lot of smaller or indie businesses put the name of the city at the end of their handle. There is also this naming trend around here to give odd sounding, two-three syllable substantives as a business name, so it’s kind of a pattern

You can add official to the end of your username….if that isn’t already taken. ?

Explain to your client that people use search, click through and reccomendations to find your account. Almost no one is ever typing it in.
Shorten it, abbreviate it, add an underscore or a hyphen. Slap a 2 digit country code on the end, add “official” on the end, add “true_” to the start.

Do just about anything other than mispell it and you’ll be ok.
People aren’t typing in usernames to find you on platforms.

Agree with the comments here. John Lewis the mid-high end department store chain in the UK that’s been around since the 1860s, doesn’t have it’s own handle on Twitter and it’s a running joke for the man called John Lewis every year when they release their Christmas ad.

They’re @jlandpartners for information so really convoluted!
