  • Weed Client – KW Choice – Should I Use Weed as a KW?

Posted by seohelper on February 24, 2021 at 2:30 am

    Title says it all…

I know that Google frowns upon using weed, THC and marijuana in KWs in some instances in the past and I think I remember there was talk about using terms like water pipe, hemp and oils in place of it instead..

But users are clearly writing weed, joints, bongs, THC, nugs, marijuana…

So I may be overthinking it, but I just wanted to ask if there are other SEOs working on weed clients with insights here.

This is a case where plurality matters. You should likely be using “weeds” as Google sees that as being completely different than just “weed”. Even “weeds” is a tough one due to the show. Your best bet is to look at the words your competitors are using and those from Google’s Keyword Planner. They would be far more accurate than anything else.

You should do the keyword research to find out.

I do SEO for weed clients too. Google keyword planner won’t help in this case. Use Ahrefs to study competitors keywords.

For me it would depend on what part of the weed industry they are in. Are they a dispensary? Cultivators? Paraphernalia? “Weed” is such a blanket term now day’s imo.

You needn’t focus on keywords. Stop using outdated SEO methods which were used in 2007. Google isn’t primitive “search machine” that uses a simple word search. Google has never worked this way.

Ask the client what clients buy the most, then use these products as your baseline for keyword research.
Let say most people buy purple haze and og kush, so keywords like: how much is 10g og kush, buy purple haze near me, and other purchase intended keyword combinations will work for you based around strains names.
other keywords can be, high thc weed near me, high cbd weed types.

weed ia not different from selling pizza, you have a lot of the same with variations.
    Think purchase intent not keyword.

Look at states where it is legal.

Illinois and Michigan dispensaries use phrases like “adult use” “cannabis” and “flower”.

Do your Kw research outside of Google. Also, search for strain names and product types, like “topicals” or “edibles”

For a Marijuana Dispensary or glass shop your going to want to get into the Directories to help with your local SEO strategy – leafly, weedmaps, etc.

Slang will differ from east coast to west coast. Might be worth doing a keyword analysis based on region and find the verbage popular in the area youre targeting. Doing an industry analysis and, for example, finding flower is selling more than wax, could help pivot what you try to rank for or blogs you write.
