On a popular motorsports channel we’ve found that posting mobile-phone shot action clips do far better than professionally produced edits. Is there an obvious reason for this? Video length? Making the user feel more connected to the riders? The edits do have outro graphics that include logo and text.

We’ve seen time and time again, the rough, raw clips outperform the edits by up to 600%. Any insights?

I honestly wish I had an answer. But I’ve noticed the same thing on some of my accounts. I do a lot of work for restaurants and bars. Some of the more pro shots I take do much worse than bang average shots we share from our customers instagrams.

My best guess is, it feels more authentic? Closer to what their friends shots would look like.

I think the relatability might be a big factor for this.

I’ve heard some marketers share finding from tests where a selfie style video with a phone out converted one where they spent 5 figures on doing a professional shoot for the video. The first one felt a lot more personal.

Because they feel more authentic to their feeds and less like produced ads.

I think because people want to avoid ads. If it looks like UGC people are more likely to engage. If you slap a logo in the beginning of that same video you would not get the same results.

Feels more like an ad. I’d personally click away.

Algorithms push it out more because it looks more native to the platform and it feels more relatable

Yes. I was filming top quality videos for a brand but they couldn’t match home filmed videos with shitty quality from people while used the products. It was very annoying.

Very interesting! There are 2 parts to this. The algorithm’s “perception” of your video and people’s responses. And of course people’s responses encourage the algorithm to promote it.
My guess is that the people think that the raw videos will be more authentic and the edited ones will be trying to sell something. Trust – people have more trust in a raw video.
