    Hey,

So I’m a freelance writer/ digital marketing student & I’m trying to become more proactive with utilising my social media since it’s a bit of a weak aspect of my overall presence in the digital marketing space.

I’ve come up with content strategies for clients I work for/ my website, but I’m struggling to know how to make Instagram & Twitter work for my personal accounts.

Twitter isn’t as hard, just share interesting articles, share testimonials I’ve received/ work I have done, but I’m not so sure about it.

Instagram I’m completely clueless with. I mainly just post pictures of nice, sunny places I’ve been to when out for walks & if I find a video that’s really funny or interesting I share on my story – but I want to make it more related to digital marketing.

Any advice/ resources on how to better use these social media’s to my advantage? Main things I’m looking for are engagement/ brand awareness to help land future clients.

As an aside – how often can I post about things unrelated to my niche? For example commenting on a football match, or a new hip hop album I’m listening to. Should I avoid posting content on my personals outside of my niche or implement it so that I show off my personality more?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

invest in canva/ illustrator or photoshop to make simple graphics that relate to your writing to tell a visual story or give a visual teaser that you can better explain or quote in the copy text. you could even create content thats tips on being a freelance writer, or behind the scenes of how you stay organized, motivated or what your writing process is like — this will help like-minded individuals in your market relate to your content, engage and follow to help you build your online community.

dont be afraid to be honest and vulnerable about what it takes to be a freelance write or even the perks (work life balance, making your own schedule) showing a personalized side can help inspire someone who wants to follow in the same industry or help you make connections with people already in the industry. make sure you create a brand voice for your account, define your color palette, even make a logo. you can use it as a portfolio as well to showcase work you’ve done that’s done well or that you’re proud of and want to post for people to see! treat it like the investment it is and make the most of it, it will definitely be beneficial and help you grow online.

    for instagram:

honestly i don’t recommend focusing your social media on digital marketing. it’s boring, most businesses that do it (esp solo/small businesses) don’t put out enough relatable and likable content even if you try really hard.

people most like content about other people or pretty things. for example, as filler content i had our graphic designer create us branded infographics about digital marketing to post on IG. they were ok but relatively unsuccessful. our work for clients: logos, ads, things like that… better success.

post a group shot of the team at a brewery or donating things for covid or office parties and it’s a huge hit.

i see this all over on instagram. don’t just be another digital marketing page. continue posting your happy content. people want to work with you because of you, not because you can type a quote that someone else said on canva.

the writing community on instagram is HUGE and very supportive. post little snippets of your OWN writing and then just… your life. “writing here today. @coffeeshop makes the best chai tea latte in City! #wittycoffeehashtag”

just my .02 from experience and research as a freelance writer and social media marketer

I wont get into advice etc. You can try out the following
    A) deciding what you are gonna communicate. Max 4 topics
    B) decide on a subtopic you gonna communicate
    C) Plan those posts in advance
    D) Review those posts the one day before and day of the post ( see whether they look contextual)

    E) D paves away to E) Keep some space for contextual and disruptive events. what you are saying on a given day may not be relevant on that day!
    F) F may appear contra to E), You should not leave your decisions on A) at any period of time ( unless of course you , yourself, lose interest)
    G) Use videos.
    H) Talk to influencers not through short, inconsequential DM s. Talk to them comprehensively over long format emails, see whether you get guest posting done on their pages.
    I) You are important and so your ideas. Ensure your ideas come the way, you want them to appear. Never bother about “trends” , “virality: etc!

    J) Use multimedia elements-like audio, video. But whatever you use, have a plan at the back.
    K) strategies a must, Tactics work but not to a great extent,

Thank you. Wish you all the success. Stay safe. stay well.
