TikTok is rolling out 3 min long video functionality.

Early access updates have been spotted in the wild (@mattnavarra on twitter is the first person I’ve seen spot it). I imagine this is in response, at least in part, to the fact that YouTube has been rolling out Shorts – their TikTok competitor.

Whole point of TikTok is short-form video content. Can’t see any way that this is a good move, long-term.

Already see a ton of creators using dark patterns to boost avg total watch time for their ~60sec videos, and it’s becoming a problem for every user across the app. Lead with a 5 second hook, 50 seconds of filler content, then 5 seconds of the actual content.

Going to get exponentially worse as time limits increase.

Interesting. As a user, pass. As a marketer, great.. I have to create yet more content.

I don’t have the attention span for longer than 40 seconds honestly ?

As someone who loves sketch comedy, I love it! I think it’s a great opportunity for more higher-quality videos to be made.

Seems like a good idea. It worked for Instagram.

Could this be about the new Learn tab that was said to be introduced in a while?

Because I’m not a kid but I would definitely not want to see a 3min long vid in my regular feed with no play controls or anything and also thinking whether it’s a short or long vid at each post will surely affect user experience.

So if this is for a new Learn or something else tab I could be ok with it (tho I am not also sure how I would feel about a third tab at the top) but other than that I don’t see much use for it.
