Hello! A friend recommended me this subreddit (I just lurk reddit in general) so I hope you guys can help me.

I’ve been a “Social Media Manager” for 4 years in the gaming industry for two companies. However, I’m confused as to what really should be my role.

At the first company I had the main responsibilities of:

    * Creating or sharing community content to the social channels
    * Handling any customer service requests by forwarding them to the correct people
    * Being a point-of-contact for community influencers
    * Creating analytic reports and figuring out what did well/didn’t

This company was bigger and more restrictive in the sense of I had to post 4 times a day, everyday no matter what and I didn’t have a say over any scheduling.

Now the second company I thought would be an upgrade since it pays way more, however my responsibilities now are:

    * Hit post after a collaborative effort of 5-6 people being involved in what the content and copy should be and when it should be posted.
    * Create analytic reports and take the blame when something does not perform well, but everyone else jumps in when something does because it was a “team effort”.
    * Work with the graphic designer to organize what graphics are needed and when.
    * Point of contact for a single influencer but told that this should be someone else’s full time job.

I am confident if I go to my manager and outline what my role *should* be then they will redefine it but even with 4 years experience I still feel like an amateur. This is where I’d like to hear what you guys do in your roles as SMM, preferably hired by a single company rather than multiple clients. A run down of your average day/responsibilities will help me apply what I should be doing. Thank you so much!

That role has such a broad term it’s going to vary from company to company. I don’t think there’s a standard.

I think these are the realities of working in social for a bigger company. You get a bigger reach, but you have significantly less creative freedom and autonomy. When working for a smaller brand you can run the show and make the brand voice your own, but bigger companies tend to have many cooks in the kitchen.

A good way to assert yourself is to take control of the content calendar and establish what should be posted when, and then go to the respective teammates to help fill in the content for each post.

Hi! I also work as a Social Media Manager and I’ve been doing it for 2 years now. I have bachelors degree in Journalism, so I strongly believe that content managers job is quite similar to what journalists do. For instance, when you write an article, the editor can guide you, but you are the one who decides HOW you are going to do this.❤️

Speaking of my day, usually it looks like this:

    1) I start by checking my emails, because I work in a big company and everyone wants to show off their work, so they always push initiatives (usually, bad initiatives and i have to be THAT bitch:D)
    2) I create posts, that need to be published that day (about 3 FB posts everyday and 1unique Instagram post.)
    3) I work on the long-term projects and create scripts for videos, strategies, plan budgets and so on. BTW, I don’t really think that I should be doing it.
    4) I help my colleagues who work directly with PR. I also shouldn’t be doing this.
    5) I end my day by checking some marketing or PR agencies social media accounts.

Answering your question, I think that every young or more experienced professional sould have its own voice, so don’t be afraid to share your concerns. Also, don’t be afraid to risk it all, be afraid to become the person you wouldn’t admire. 🙂

I’ve been a social media manager / web designer / graphic designer for my last two jobs

at this job I also do photography and video work. I kind of get the impression for this to be workable you have to be sort of a jack of all trades

Anyway I can deff relate to taking all the blame and getting none of the credit. When I get a ton of likes / follows because of quality posts I hear jack shit about it from my boss but everything she sees a red arrow on our Facebook insights page or there is some problem with a post I am sure to hear about it right away.

0% chance of recieving praise for a good result and a 100% chance or recieving an annoyed email if something goes wrong or our numbers go down (even over the course of 7 days.)

    Shit is annoying.
