The new NYT Opinion video on “how to make the internet suck less”, the presenter says big tech should “fund art, not advertisers”. But…
…advertisers fund big tech, not the other way round, right? He seems to be claiming that rather than algorithms optimising for attention, and thereby making social media companies money from advertisers, there should an alternative model where money is funnelled to creators instead. Okay, fine, that would be lovely. But what does this actually mean in terms of an alternative business model?
Social media doesn’t currently “fund advertisers”, advertisers fund social media companies. Is this a big flaw in his argument or have I just misunderstood what he means?
