I recently created an online presence for the bar I work at (website, Facebook, Instagram). I started about 3 months ago, and the Instagram page has 1600 followers while Facebook has 700 likes. The (next) goal is to hit 2000 followers and 1000 likes and I’m almost there. However, I feel like I’m missing something as I’ve noticed I’ve started to plateau.

Organic reach and engagement on Facebook is just trash, it’s terrible and I’m not sure how to improve it without paying?? Everything online is hidden behind a damn paywall too.

On Instagram, it’s the engagement. I need more quality followers and as much as I engage with my current followers + people I’m following, I don’t get it back.

I have quality pictures + videos, we do giveaways, and I even post pics of drink/shot recipes.

It’s a local sports bar, the Instagram handle is sneakerssportsloungee (with the two e’s at the end). I’d love some critiques, advice, or any comments on how the page looks and where I can go from here, all I want is to learn and get better.

How can I go above and beyond to make people really get excited about following us and engaging with us?

    Thanks in advance!!

    Ok bad news first.

A big problem for you is that the content is pretty low quality (it’s a lot of poorly lit photos of booze bottles) so it’s hard for you to gain followers beyond anyone who might be a current patron and big fan of the establishment.

Secondly – it’s the middle of a pandemic so going out to a bar is super low priority for majority of people so of course the engagement is going to be low.

You need to really up the photo and video game – make the images beautiful, remind people of the good times that they had and will have again. And get creative – post some food porn and remind people you have take out idk there’s a million things you could do but it all revolves around putting in more effort at the base content imo

In addition to the first comment, your post lack human appearance. Your post wont attract attention if it is poorly lit (low quality), and because it is a bar, I encourage you to post more images with people in it (workers, customers). I suggest you dive more into market research, to understand what age range you will be posting for (meme marketing is very effective to add to your posts or story, viral repost is also a good strategy). Keep in mind some people on IG are using dark theme, including me, and your posts are not vibrant enough for primary colors to stand out with the brown/yellow/very warm background. You can adjust this by using editing apps that can take out a lot of warm tones. Keep your hashtag in the comment so your copy won’t look so busy. Lastly, if you have time, research your competitors to learn their posting strategy, look for elements on posts that do well. I hope this will help you in the right direction 🙂

Bad news first buddy: You’re screwed. IG and Facebook let’s you grow a but and then kills you’re organic reach which kills your engagement. This is how they try to get you to pay for reach. You will now see multiple ads asking you to boost or promote your content. Don’t do it. It’s a scam. They use similar tactics to that of drug dealers. Give you a taste, get you hooked and then you pay more and more for less and less.

I agree with everything that’s been said here . Especially about the human side, don’t be afraid to be more direct to your audience by asking them something in the captions. I noticed you don’t have that many comments. Attract the attention of people by asking them their opinion or anything that could make them start a discussion. We tend to forget captions on Instagram but they are actually very important, they shouldn’t describe what’s on the picture but give an additional information. I like the idea of the recipes, it’s a good way of getting more engagement . You could ask people if they’ve tried it, or what’s their favorite.
And if people comment, dont just like their comment: answer to it. By saying thank you or even asking a question to start a discussion.

Thanks a lot everybody, this gives me a lot to think about and work on. Super appreciative!!

A lot of the times we are biased and think our works a lot better than it actually is, so it’s nice to hear all of your completely unbiased opinions and advice!
