  • Splitting a website in two domains (creating two sites from one)

Posted by seohelper on January 4, 2021 at 7:43 pm

    Hello guys,

I own a website where I write about Android and iOS phones. However, I want to expand to iPads and Macs. But I don’t think it would make too much sense to write about everything on my current site, because I’ll be targeting a niche that’s too broad.

So, I’ve come to an idea to split my site across two domains. I’d keep Android articles on the current domain, and transfer iOS articles to another domain, where I would also start writing about Macs and iPads. Essentially, that would create two separate sites that are each specifically about one OS.

So, I wanna ask does that even make sense? I know transferring (redirecting) a website to a new domain shouldn’t be too big of a problem for seo, but what about transferring only a part of a site? Could that hurt the original site?

I hope you understand what I’m trying to ask.

    Thanks!

I don’t know your site as well as you, so take this with a grain of salt, but I don’t recommend creating a second website.

Managing one website is a challenge all on its own (especially if you want to do it right), managing two websites will most likely weigh you down and eventually, one of the two sites will suffer because of it.

Additionally, I don’t think these “topics” are unique enough to warrant two websites. You have a very clear tech focus and the addition of ipad or even macbook articles/blogs isn’t taking you away from that. Imagine if cnet had different websites to cover PC news, laptop news, smartphone news, tablet news, etc. It would get out of hand fast, and it wouldn’t work. You just have to make sure you have a great navigation, accurate tagging, and good filtering options.

The last point I want to make, is that a brand new, second website won’t have the benefit of the authority and history you’ve already built up with your current site. It’s going to take a lot of time and effort (as you probably already know) to get a second website to a point where it’s consistently driving traffic and meeting your goals.

Those topics overlap a lot. I would create different sections or silos if anything.

    Please keep one site.

Google is smart enough to niche your categories.

Google would probably recommend keeping one site too.

If it’s too broad, it’s not a niche.

Why are you expanding in the first place? Have you weighed the benefits of going deeper into your existing topics?

I think it is a good idea. The main (and the one) disadvantage is cost of creation and maintenance two sites instead of one.

Why is it a good idea? Typically these are two different target audiences. So, you can use material design for site for Android users, for example. You can use more specific content style for site for Apple users. In other words it is a good marketing strategy, well, marketing strategies. You can focus on needs and pains each audience.

For SEO you can use links as well as you use internal linking now. For old content it is important to set up redirects in the right way.

    Good luck!

Definitely don’t split up the site. Create subdirectories for each topic.

I would keep it on the same site.
