Firstly, I am 38, almost 39. Hurts to even think it honestly. But I remember the mid to late 90s fondly. But the topic at hand here is how social media has impacted us. Now I think genx and millennials will vibe with this transition most. In 2003 I had a Nokia. 2006 a T-mobile flip phone. That was the first echo of what ill refer to as mobile media. It brought free nights and weekends which id use to get my yahoo messenger, msn messenger, and AIM fix on. But it was limited, hardly an all day affair About 2010, just a couple years after iPhone was released was when the addiction started to be noticed imo. I personally didnt get a (smartphone) until 2011 #droidincredible2. But the cultural shift was fully evident by then because we were all just glued to the screens by then. The popularity of tiktok and reels finished the addition in one fell swoop. Social Media ironically, has made us less social. This isnt a big I got you moment. But it's more reflective. Like I genuinely remember a time where you would go out to eat and there were no smart phones to be on. Now I slide on over to a buffalo wild wings and everybody is just looking down at their phones (myself included), even though there are tvs galore to watch in the restaurant.

How do we get out of this trap?

Sometimes when i’m on the subway i just look around, i got my first smartphone about 2019 so i’m used to just listening music on my phone.

But yes, I do use it a lot especially if I’m home. Somehow when going out I like watching my surroundings more, or talking to people if I’m with friends.

Don’t know if this answers your question but maybe just someone else’s pov could be helpful?

I always think one of the most interesting places to observe this is in the gym. The notion of reading a book between sets is super weird but scrolling is perfectly normal. Even just staring into space / at the floor and just focusing on breathing it’s easy to feel awkward and self-conscious. And when you look around, people are scrolling, sometimes for so long that you know you’ll never get the machine after their 5 minute set breaks (I’d like to add that I too scroll and am guilty of the long set breaks, but it’s just so bizarre how the notion of sitting alone, thinking and breathing is so uncommon compared to scrolling)

Smart phones have rewired our dopamine levels. It makes doing boring things seem much harder than it should be. When did feeling bored become something to avoid? Are we afraid of our own thoughts?
